Project Overview
The Fromelles Project is divided into a number of activities:
- Limited Excavation - this aimed to prove the existence of human remains at Pheasant Wood. This was achieved.
- Archaeological Excavation - this aimed to slowly, methodically and reverently recover the soldiers at Pheasant Wood. This has been completed.
- Cemetery Construction - a purpose-built cemetery for the soldiers is being constructed near Pheasant Wood. It will be named the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery. This has commenced.
- Re-interment - the soldiers will be buried in the new Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery with full military honours. Detailed planning has commenced.
- Identification - all reasonable steps will be taken to identify as many soldiers recovered from Pheasant Wood as possible. Detailed analysis of the remains is underway and planning for the March identification board has commenced.
- Commemoration - the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery will be completed when the final unknown soldier from Pheasant Wood is buried with full military honours. This will occur on 19 July 2010.
