Re-interment
The re-interment of the soldiers recovered from Pheasant Wood will commence on Saturday 30 January 2010 and will continue throughout February 2010. This will be a joint activity between the Australian and British Armies.
During the re-interment, the cemetery itself will be a designated construction zone with access only granted to Commonwealth War Graves Commission authorised personnel. This is necessary for the saftey of all. Although the public will not be able to pay their respects from beside the graves, the re-interments will be able to be viewed from designated public viewing areas just outside the cemetery.
All but one of the recovered soldiers will be re-intered at this time in the Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery.
The remaining soldier will be re-intered during a public Commemorative Event
on 19 July 2010.
The number of sets of remains recovered from Pheasant Wood will impact greatly on the re-interment schedule. The archaeological excavation of all sets of remains is anticipated to be complete by the end of September 2009 - Army will be able to provide a more detailed plan for the re-interment after that time.
