Archaeological Excavation

Generals Sykes (UK), Hurley and O'Brien (L to R)The Archaeological Excavation operation to recover the soldiers interred at Pheasant Wood began on 5 May 2009.

Australian, United Kingdom and French officials were on-site to witness the commencement of the excavation that will run until the end of September 2009 where all remains will be recovered from the mass burial site.

Oxford Archaeology has been contracted by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Open in new window to perform this work. The Commission will closely supervise the excavation and exhumation to ensure all soldiers are recovered for later identification and re-interment.
