Training

The training facilities at RMC are designed to be as conducive as possible to effective learning.

WEAPON TRAINING SIMULATOR (WTSS) - Cadets are expected to be competent in all facets of military training. An integral part of this training is weapon handling and the employment of weapons systems.

The Weapons Training Simulation System (WTSS) is a computer-generated training program designed to allow cadets to practice weapon handling, firing accuracy and marksmanship principles, without actually firing live ammunition. The program also allows cadets to fire a wide variety of weapons including the F88 Austyer rifle, F89 Minimi Light Support Weapon and the 84mm Carl Gustav anti-armour weapon.

MILITARY INSTRUCTION BLOCK - Most of the theory lessons taught at RMC are conducted in the Military Instruction Block (MI Block). During 2004, the MI Block received a multi-million dollar upgrade to enhance the facility. There are several different facilities all co-located within the MI block. These include, a Flexible Learning Centre, model room, lecture theatres and syndicate rooms.

The Flexible Learning Centre (FLC) provides cadets with access to computers that are connected to the Defence intranet as well as the internet. Some subjects taught at RMC require cadets to complete computer self-paced learning programs. Assessments also take place in this computer centre.

Much time is spent in developing tactical planning skills. The study of Military History is important for understanding the contemporary and future battle field. The two model rooms located within the MI block are a valuable learning tool. They allow miniature representations of battles and tactical scenarios to be created with large-scale models. They are also capable of showing digital audio-visual material to enhance learning.

The lecture theatres located within the MI Block are used for instruction of most subjects within the curriculum at the college. They contain an integrated audio/video suite allowing PowerPoint presentations, videos, audio and live material to be integrated into a single presentation without difficulty.

A number of syndicate rooms are also located within the MI Block. Each syndicate room holds up to 12 people and allows small group discussion. The syndicate rooms also allow cadets to debate important issues such as tactical problems, leadership issues and ethical dilemmas, while whiteboards enable important points to be noted for later study.

MAJURA FIELD FIRING RANGE (MFFR) - Majura Range is the area where cadets usually go to conduct field training, navigation, range practices (firing weapons) or to conduct practical leadership and tactics exercises.

It is located between Canberra Airport and Queanbeyan and has a small barracks called Camp Blake located near the range area.

Camp Blake, the main accomodation area, is where cadets undergo Initial Cadet Training. The facilities are basic, providing only the necessities. There is a public phone on site with which you will be permitted to contact your family once per week.

Other features of Majura Range include a bayonet assault course, a leadership reaction course and a PT facility. It is about 20 minutes drive from RMC.
