ROYAL AUSTRALIAN CORPS OF MILITARY POLICE

90TH ANNIVERSARY

2nd April 2006

The Royal Australian Corps of Military Police can trace its history in Australia back to the landing of the first fleet, when Henry Brewer was appointed Provost Marshal of the new settlement.

The following years had always seen a 'military' police presence in Australia and abroad. Provosts were a vital part of the Australian commitment to the Boer War and during World War I, including exemplary service at Gallipoli in 1915.

In early 1916 General Sir Archibald Murray appointed Major John Williams, APM to form a Military Police corps in order to provide policing support to the commanders of the AIF.

On 3 Apr 1916 the Anzac Provost Corps (APC) was founded from the ranks of Military Mounted Police (MMP), Australian Police Corps, New Zealand Expeditionary Force and other contributing units.

Over the years the name has changed several times, including the Australian Provost Corps, the Royal Australian Army Provost Corps (RAAPC), and the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police (RACMP).

Regardless of the changes of name, Australian Military Police have continued to provide essential support to commanders and soldiers in peace and war. The role of RACMP in today's Army is just as important as it ever has been, and men and women of the Corps are deployed to every current theatre of operations.

Principal guests and dignitaries on the day included the Greek Consul General Mr Iannis Raptakis, Deputy Chief of Army, Major General Ian Gordon AO, the Commissioner of NSW Police, Ken Maroney APM and Provost Marshal - Land Royal Military Police Colonel Phil Baillie (United Kingdom).

The ceremony was hosted by Lieutenant Colonel Murray Heron, Head of Corps/ Commandant of the Defence Police Training Centre
