Following is a list of frequently asked questions of APA-A staff and the general responses to these questions. Where possible, links to current supporting policy have been included. Please be aware that these responses are a guide only and if you require any clarification ensure you use your chain of command or contact the relevant APA-A staff member.
How can I contact my Career Manager?
Members should use their chain of command to obtain access to their Career Managers at APA-A . For a full list of APA-A staff and their contact details visit the Unit Directory (Defweb) page but remember many APA-A staff are reservists and may not be contactable via APA-A office phones other than on Tuesday nights.
How do I apply for courses?
Members who are interested in applying for courses may request information regarding the availability and criteria of any course. This information may be accessed by unit orderly rooms via ARMYTIMS. A member who wishes to nominate for a particular course should contact their orderly room who, if the criteria for the course is met, will submit an application to the relevant paneling authority.
How can I apply for a posting?
Members who wish to be posted to another unit within the region are to approach their orderly room. An application for reposting, which is found in the user guide for reserve Officer/Soldier management, is to be completed and recommended by the member's current unit, then forwarded to the new unit for recommendation. After both units have recorded their recommendation the application is forwarded to APA-A where it will be considered with regard to the merits of the member and the service requirements.
When can I expect promotion?
Promotion for members is very much dependent on merit of the member and vacancies in the region. Career managers within the APA regularly look at members personal history and performance appraisals in determining a priority list for personnel ready for promotion. Generally members should have spent 36 months in their current rank before being considered for promotion to the next level. All members may contact their Career Managers at APA-A on Tuesday nights for further information.
I don't have time for the Reserves right now, but would like to serve again in the foreseeable future?
Members who for personal/work reasons can no longer commit themselves to the GRes, but would like to return to service in the foreseeable future may transfer to the Inactive Reserves (IAAR). Applications are submitted through unit orderly rooms and forwarded to APA-A for determination. Each application is checked to see if the member meets the criteria for transfer to the IAAR. Generally members should be AIRN compliant or be able to present strong evidence as to why they should be considered for transfer to the IAAR despite being non-compliant. Transfer to IAAR is not an option for those serving personnel who do not hold a trade.
Can I change my trade and if so how?
If a member requires or requests to change their trade, they are to apply through their unit orderly room for either a Corps transfer or Trade Reallocation. This form is found in the User Guide for Reserve Officer/Soldier Management, once the unit has recommended the members suggested Corps Transfer or Trade Reallocation it is then forwarded to APA for determination. If the member currently holds the trade of the Corps they are requesting transfer to and meets transfer criteria, a transfer may be approved immediately to the equivalent pay level and ECN. If the member is not qualified in the trade that they have requested a transfer to, APA-A may approve in principle a Corps/Trade Transfer, which will take effect upon successful completion of the relevant trade course. For detailed information on all Army trades visit the Stay Army web site.
I'm leaving the region - What should I do?
All members who are leaving the region have a responsibility to report this up through their chain of command to the unit orderly room. If the member concerned still wishes to serve with the GRes in the new region they are to contact their unit's orderly room and inform them of their new address once they have arrived in the new locality. Members may contact the APA of the new region to ascertain vacancies available. An application for reposting may be submitted through their new unit, which will be recommended by both the new and old units prior to forwarding to the APA of the new region. For members who do not wish to serve any longer, they are to notify their unit who will administer their discharge. If a member wishes to be placed on the inactive list and meet the criteria for transfer to the inactive list, they are to notify their unit who will administer the required staff action.
