How is an offensive force raised after a period of peace? What training imperatives underpin operational deployments in preparing forces for war? What strategic and logistic issues need to be addressed to sustain a fighting force? If you would like to know more about these critical issues, you need to attend the 2009 Chief of Army's Military History Conference. The conference will bring together distinguished scholars and practitioners from the United Kingdom, United States and Australia.

Professor Brian Holden Reid from King's College London will be delivering the Keynote address on ‘How were American Civil War armies kept in the field?' This paper is sure to provide new insights into what we know about the American Civil War along with the problems of logistical supply to nineteenth-century armies.

Other papers will examine the issue of sustaining the American Army in WWI; raising and sustaining the Imperial Russian Army; the training and logistical supply of the 2nd AIF in Libya; the problems of supplying the Japanese in New Guinea; and the US Army's experience in Korea. Day two will look at a range of interesting papers from the British Army and Imperial Defence up to the outbreak of WWI; the role of Reserve forces in overseas deployments; a close look at raising, training and sustaining Australian land forces in the 1970s and 1980s; and the deployment and sustainment of INTERFET. Finally, two very thought provoking papers on the Canadian Army after the Cold War and the survival of the British Army's Regimental system will close proceedings.

The Chief of Army's Military History Conference is open to registrations from military and ex-military personnel, civilian APS and the general public. The Chief of Army and the Army History Unit encourage everyone to register and attend this event. It promises to be a thoroughly engaging and informative Conference.
