Ice climbing involves climbing frozen waterfalls and cliffs covered in ice using crampons and ice axes.
Mixed climbing routes include sections of ice climbing and sections of rock climbing.
Some alpine ascents require extensive use of ice climbing techniques.
Opportunities for ice climbing in Australia are limited. Blue Lake (Main Range, Kosciusko National Park, NSW), accessed from Charlottes Pass, and, to a lesser extent, Rams Head (Main Range, Kosciusko National Park, NSW), accessed from Thredbo, are the most popular locations for practising ice climbing techniques.
Most ice climbers based in Australia go overseas (eg Canada) to climb.
Ice climbing is a hazardous activity and beginners should climb under the supervision of competent climbers until they have mastered the skill and developed the knowledge to climb safely.
AAA has the equipment and experienced leaders to assist you to get into ice climbing. For more information about getting into ice climbing, contact the Committee. |
