Our Graduate Program

The Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) is seeking highly skilled and motivated graduates to apply their skills and knowledge to achieve AGO's strategic goals: to deliver geospatial intelligence (GEOINT); lead the Department of Defence geospatial domain; and position our organisation for the future. Our 12-month Graduate Program comprises two streams: GEOINT Analyst and GEOINT Technologist. AGO graduates benefit from:

  • contributing to Australia's national security
  • supporting the Australian Defence Force
  • strengthening their confidence, initiative, communication skills and decision-making ability, and
  • pursuing ongoing education, specialist training, career diversity and promotional opportunities.

Graduate streams

Geospatial Intelligence Analyst

Our GEOINT analysts undertake detailed analytical intelligence work with sophisticated tools using a range of data sources. AGO's role as the Australian Government's leading geospatial intelligence agency requires people with excellent analytical, research and communication skills who are comfortable with the technologies we use and can communicate their results effectively to customers.

Our analysts research, analyse and report on a country or region or a specific thematic international issue to meet the requirements of customers ranging from government leaders to tactical users.

Geospatial Intelligence Technologist

Our GEOINT technologists undertake analytical work with a distinctive technical focus. As the exploitation of imagery is a key AGO activity, we place great importance on maintaining and developing our capability to use new technologies in areas such as remote sensing. Technologists liaise closely with Defence Science and Technology Group, national research organisations, academia and industry to help AGO make the most of emerging technologies.

We also have several large-scale Defence projects that must be delivered over the next few years as part of continual capability development programs and the introduction of new technology. There is significant opportunity for graduates within AGO to build further on the strong technical expertise already established and expand the role of technologists.

Our technologists have a wide variety of specialist skills and knowledge including geographic information systems (GIS), information technology (IT), scripting and applications development, web services, design and functionality, database management and analysis and remote sensing in several disciplines, including radar, spectral and infrared. GEOINT technologists research and apply advanced techniques, and develop and transition valuable technology into operational applications or provide high-end technical support to analysts.

Our GEOINT analysts and technologists undertake training throughout the 12-month Graduate Program through internal and vendor-based training courses.

During the 12-month Graduate Program our GEOINT analysts and technologists undertake two rotations with different AGO sections and one external rotation within Defence.

Living in Canberra

Our Graduate Program is located in Canberra. We understand that moving away from home, family and friends is a big decision, but the following information provides a snapshot of living in the national capital.

Canberra is a modern and vibrant city that has changed rapidly over the last decade. With a population of approximately 390,000 and growing, it is a clean, green city with good roads and major amenities in close proximity, making travel around the city quick and easy.

Canberra is just two hours drive from the South Coast's pristine beaches and the Snowy Mountains ski fields, and three hours drive from Sydney.

Canberra boasts an array of national cultural institutions, universities, museums, galleries, theatres, multicultural restaurants, live performance venues and clubs. There is easy access to lakes, parks and green space, sporting facilities, bicycle paths and the bush.

You will enjoy four distinct seasons in Canberra: warm to hot summers; colourful, leafy autumns; clear, crisp winters; and bright springs. With low humidity levels, you will feel comfortable all year round.

On the social side, AGO graduates are invited to join an informal social network comprising graduates from other federal government departments. The network organises a variety of social activities and events for its members, along with providing valuable social support to those who have relocated to Canberra. Events include trips to snowfields, sporting events, parties and formal balls. The network offers an ideal opportunity to meet, interact and form professional and social relationships with other graduates living in Canberra.
