Eligibility

You must be an Australian citizen with a checkable background and be willing to undertake an extensive security and background checking process to apply for work with AGO.

APS selection and recruitment process

AGO recruitment is merit-based, in accordance with Australian Public Service (APS) principles. To be appointed to the APS, you must be deemed a ‘fit and proper person’. This assessment involves checking, where appropriate, police records, employment history and referees.

Your application

You must address the selection criteria in your application. This information is the primary basis upon which a selection panel will short-list applicants for further consideration. The APS Commission and APS Careers @ Defence provide advice on applying for public service jobs. Refer to Cracking the Code: How to Apply for Jobs in the Australian Public Service, especially Fact Sheet 5: Addressing Selection Criteria.

Security and psychological assessments

A security assessment, comprising a background check covering the past 10 years or from your 16th birthday (whichever is greater), a psychological assessment and an interview is a prerequisite for all AGO employees. Security assessments measure your personal integrity and suitability to work in a high security environment and hold a Positive Vetting security clearance. The assessment typically takes 6–12 months from receipt of your documents. A psychological assessment (PDF) is a mandatory requirement for work in Defence intelligence agencies.

Engagement of redundancy benefit recipients
