Military Decision Making

Constructive simulations are used to support training for military decision making. As a training tool for war-gaming they provide a means to visualise, analyse and compare Courses Of Action.


Simulation Products Supporting Training in Military Decision Making

JSWAT (Joint Seminar Wargaming Adjudication Tool) produced by DST, is a computer based war-gaming environment combining features of seminar and system war-games. It uses a set of models to assist with the adjudication of movement, outcome of hostilities, detection by opposing forces, and logistics of consumption, replenishment and transport.

The main screen shown below shows a map display with drawing tools and the ability to add additional layers. Properties are defined for each terrain type to describe the effect of the terrain on sensors and mobility. An ORBAT browser (displaying a tree structure similar to MS Windows file explorer) provides the ability to build an ORBAT from a library of generic entities. Items from the ORBAT browser can be dragged onto the map where they are displayed with the correct military symbology.

The system uses a turn based model and the game state can be saved at the end of each turn; allowing for investigation of alternate Courses Of Action. The time and movement model allows users to jump forward or back in time in steps to view game state at any point. The software is implemented as a client-server architecture or can be run as a standalone application.
