University of New South Wales Medalist Announced

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) Chancellor, Mr David Gonski, presented Air Force Officer Cadet Christopher Lowe with the prestigious UNSW University Medal during the Degree Conferring Ceremony for Science and Engineering in Canberra on 10 December 2008.

Chris has graduated with First Class Honours in Electrical Engineering from UNSW@ADFA. At the ADFA Prizes and Awards Ceremony later that night, he was also presented with the AH Corbett Prize for the most outstanding graduate in Engineering as well as the BAE Systems Australia Award in Electrical Engineering (Communications and Electronics).

The Minister for Defence, the Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP, has congratulated Chris on his achievement.

"Chris is an extremely high achieving individual. I congratulate him for this well deserved honour and I wish him every success for his future in the Australian Defence Force," Mr Fitzgibbon said.

"Across his four years here at ADFA, Chris participated in the Chief of the Defence Force Student Program, receiving a High Distinction average for his studies. He has worked extremely hard and all his effort has paid off," Mr Fitzgibbon said.

Chris was also awarded the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Beaufort Bomber Scholarship for his aviation project on Control Of Piezoelectric Devices For Quantum Computing Applications. The RAAF Beaufort Bomber Scholarship is awarded to the best applicant who, as part of their UNSW@ADFA studies, has completed an investigative or practical project addressing a Royal Australian Air Force issue relevant to the Australian Defence Force.

21 year-old Chris, from Fingal in Tasmania, joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 2005 and graduated from the Australian Defence Force Academy in 2007. He has played for the ADFA Rams Australian Football Club and rowed for the ADFA Rowing Club, captaining the ADFA Men’s Eights in 2007.
