The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) welcomes the Review into the Treatment of Women at ADFA by Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick which was released on 3 November 2011.
The report looked into the adequacy and appropriateness of measures to promote gender equity at ADFA, and also considered what further initiatives are required to drive cultural change in the treatment of women at ADFA.
It is a comprehensive report which touches on all aspects of life at ADFA in 2011.
In her report, Ms Broderick found there were positive improvements in ADFA’s culture since the mid 1990s, however there are some areas which can be improved. She also noted that for the most part, both male and female Midshipmen and Officer Cadets had a positive experience at ADFA.
The Acting Chief of the Defence Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin, said he was extremely proud of the way the Officer Cadets, Midshipmen and staff at ADFA had conducted themselves during this Review.
He said their willingness to participate and their honesty was a positive reflection on themselves and on the ethos and values of the Academy.
There were 31 recommendations in the report, and from here ADFA will be working closely with the Vice Chief of the Defence Force to determine the best way forward in adopting and implementing them.
This is a priority for ADFA to ensure it remains the pre-eminent tertiary and military education training academy for future leaders of the ADF.
