The Academy Cadet’s Mess, or ACM, is home to the usual uni student’s blend of frequent live bands and DJ’s at parties as well as chill-out sessions. However, the ACM is also the venue for more formal, though no less enjoyable, events such as the annual Army Regimental Dining–in. A tradition passed down to the Australian Army through its British Army ancestry, the Dining–in is an opportunity for Officer Cadets to celebrate their commitment to their unit, service and country. There’s also a chance to rub shoulders with the Army’s top brass, all the while enjoying an outstanding three course meal and the entertainment provided throughout the night.
The evening begins with the Officer Cadets arriving in their mess dress, the black tie of military uniforms, and enjoying champagne or other refreshments while waiting for the official guests to arrive. After the arrival and announcement of guests, the Army Banner is marched into the dining room and the dining begins under the control of the Dining President. At the conclusion of the meal the traditional passing of the port occurs, allowing diners to charge their glasses in preparation for the toasts. The first toast conducted is the Loyal toast to the Queen and during this toast it is customary to face the Queen’s portrait. Other toasts are proposed to Foreign Heads of State, the Australian Defence Force Academy and a final toast is made to Fallen Comrades.
After a short speech from the guest speaker, the formal part of the evening ends and the more relaxed aspects begins. Military Mess customs and traditions include a collection of traditional games played requiring strength, skill and the utmost in determination to succeed, and humourous speeches on the year to date.
At the end of the evening the official guests depart the mess and the Officer Cadets, once again, have the mess to themselves. There is time for a few quiet drinks before the adventurous make their journey into town and the weary head for their beds.
