ADFA Graduation Parade 2008

11 December 2008

The 2008 ADFA Graduation Parade was held on Thursday 11 December, and celebrated one of ADFA's largest graduating classes. 247 Navy Midshipmen and Army and Air Force Officer Cadets marched on Parade with more than 500 of their colleagues to celebrate their successful completion of three years of military training, leadership studies and university education at ADFA.

Minister for Defence, The Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon, was received by the Parade and later met with graduates and their families.

"The Graduation Parade is a significant milestone in the careers of these young men and women," Mr Fitzgibbon said.

"They have successfully completed a three-year military and leadership training program, while undertaking undergraduate studies through the University of New South Wales at ADFA.

"This training has developed the fundamental knowledge, professional skills and qualities of character they will need as young officers in the Australian Defence Force.

"They have matured into exemplary individuals who demonstrate high levels of professionalism, integrity and leadership, and they should be proud of their achievements," Mr Fitzgibbon said.

During the Graduation Parade, the Academy’s most prestigious award, the Commander in Chief Medal, was awarded to Midshipman Wei Chong Benson Chian, of the Republic of Singapore Navy, by the Governor-General, Her Excellency, Ms Quentin Bryce, AC. This Medal is awarded to the most outstanding graduate in the fields of military and academic achievement as well as leadership, personal example and performance of duty.

The Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, presented the Chief of the Defence Force Sword of Honour for Leadership to Officer Cadet Jessica Van Vogelpoel, who displayed the highest standard of leadership and officer development amongst the graduating class. Midshipman Danica Ellicott, Officer Cadet Alison Heenan and Officer Cadet Cavin Wilson were awarded the Chief of Navy, Chief of Army and Chief of Air Force prizes respectively.

The Midshipmen and Officer Cadets who graduated today will be posted to establishments around Australia to continue their training. Eleven international students will return home, having been outstanding ambassadors for their respective countries.
